Session 2011-12 Chairmanˇ¦s Message


Good evening, fellow engineers

It is my great honour and pleasure to be elected as the Chairman of the CIBSE Hong Kong Branch for the year 2011-12. It will be a challenging but exciting job right ahead of me to serve the Hong Kong Branch of over 2,400 members.

Thanks to the good work and achievement made by our Past Chairmen for their excellent leadership and their committee members for their wholehearted contribution in laying down a firm foundation for further development of the Branch. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my gratitude to them. In my coming term of service, I will do my best to continue the achievements and good work done by my predecessors. Fortunately, I will be backed up and supported by the experienced and capable committee team. Together we shall ride on the success of previous endeavour and roll out various functions and activities to upkeep our professionalism, enhance our strength and support our members with the following plan.

1. To promote the BS profession and build up reputation of CIBSE and CIBSE-HKB

  • We shall continue our representation in Government task forces and working groups and provide consultation advice to technical and social issues, particularly on issues related to the BS profession such as green building, sustainability, climate change and IAQ etc.

  • We shall enhance our membersˇ¦ public role and professional standing, through the active participation in community as well as government services.

  • We shall continue organizing career talks and activities for students in universities and tertiary institutions.

  • We shall strengthen the collaboration with academic and professional institutions as well as government departments for carrying out research studies related to the BS profession.

  • We shall continue our active participation and collaboration with partner institutions in organizing professional and learned society activities.

  • We shall continue giving support to the HQs and the Shanghai Panel in promoting CIBSE and the BS profession in mainland China.

2. To provide value-added services to our members

  • We shall continue organizing symposia and seminars to facilitate continued professional development of our members including annual Hong Kong and Mainland building services symposia, technical courses, talks and visits etc to promote the continual professional development of our members with enriched knowledge and skills

  • We shall broaden the spectrum of technical activities and to invite Distinguished Guest speakers from HK and overseas to deliver talks of interest to our members.

  • We shall strengthen communication with our members and links with our profession through regular update of our Branch Website and issue of newsletters, organizing more social gathering and events for our members to extend networking and to share their views & interests.

3. To act as the link between the HQs and Hong Kong members

  • We shall strengthen the communication between our secretariat office and the HQs for the benefit of Hong Kong member.

  • We shall take a proactive role in reflecting the feedback and opinions received from our HK members to the Headquarters so that the interests of HK members are taken into account in HQsˇ¦ activities.

4. To maintain membership growth

  • We shall promote the benefits of CIBSE membership and encourage not only the building services but also other related building professionals and practitioners to join our institution.

  • We shall strengthen the membership promotion to graduates to encourage their transfer of student membership to graduate membership.

  • We shall enhance our promotion in the universities via our Young Engineers Network (YEN) and provide sponsorship to students for joining as student members since the students are future source to maintain our membership growth.

In order to strive for better performance of the Branch aiming at making it to become one of the best CIBSE branches, my committee and I surely will need your continued support and contributions. Please let us know if you have any views, comments or suggestions regarding the works and activities of the Branch.

Last but not least, I would like all of you here to join me to express my heartfelt thanks to our current Chairman, Dr T M Chung and the HK Branch committee members for their hard work and valuable contribution during the term of service in 2010-11.
